Words - More Than Just Talk

Words are building blocks of communication. They express our emotions and help communicate our needs. But some people can't find the words-they have a communication disorder. Disorders can affect their ability to speak or prevent them from understanding.

Certified speech-language pathologists are the professionals who identify, evaluate and treat a wide range of speech, language and swallowing disorders.

Hearing Aid Products and Services

Hearing Testing

Graduate student clinicians, under the supervision of clinically certified university faculty, perform a variety of hearing tests to thoroughly define the status of the auditory system. These tests help determine if medical evaluation is warranted, as well as the type and degree of hearing loss, probable cause of hearing loss, and the specific hearing aid characteristics needed. Following hearing testing, the graduate student clinician will discuss the impact of the hearing loss on communication, the potential benefit and limitations of hearing aids, and the hearing aid style and circuitry options appropriate for the individual. Hearing aid selection is based upon patient and clinician input.

Hearing Aid Ordering and Fitting

Custom hearing aids are delivered to the University Hearing & Speech Clinic two to three weeks after ordering. Hearing aid performance is verified on fitting day by computer analysis and behavioral testing. The hearing aid user is familiarized with hearing aid use and maintenance, and the adaptation process to newly amplified sounds. Weekly follow-up visits to assess the suitability of the hearing aid are available. The follow-up visits are used for fine tuning of the hearing aid settings and to address concerns which arise as part of the normal adaptation process to new hearing aids. Attendance at the follow-up visits is strongly encouraged, however, the scheduling remains at the discretion of the hearing aid purchaser.

45 Day Trial Use Period

The staff of the University Hearing & Speech Clinic want the hearing aid purchaser to be satisfied with the new hearing aids and the investment they represent. We offer a 45-day period during which you may return the hearing aids and receive a refund of the purchase price, minus a non-refundable handling fee of$30.00 per instrument. All professional fees associated with the hearing testing are non-refundable. New hearing aid users are eligible for enrollment in an ongoing aural rehabilitation group at no charge. This group is designed to help the new user address common communication needs in home, social and occupational environments. Individual therapy is available to those hearing aid users wanting more intensive or one-on-one assistance.

 Programs for Students

The clinical experience is arranged in three stages. Stage one offers hands-on treatment at the University Hearing & Speech Clinic with clients of all ages and a variety of speech, language and hearing disorders. The first two terms of therapy are completed at the University Clinic under the supervision of university supervisors. Opportunities also exist for pediatric clinical experience at Rockwood Clinic, Spokane County Headstart, Isabella House, and Shriner's Hospital. Stage two occurs at an off-site location where students participate in 8-12 hours of clinical work per week in addition to their course work. Additionally, the Universities sponsor a clinical receptor position with St. Luke's Rehabilitation Institute to support students in medical speech pathology. Stage three is a full-time off-site internship. Students typically complete two internships to ensure experience with a variety of disorders and to complete the American Speech & Hearing Association (ASHA) clock-hour minimum requirements for graduation.
